About the Studio
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, wife to Harry Payne Whitney, was an icon of style and a major force in the American art world. Her Long Island Studio, located in Old Westbury, was both her creative retreat and a place to entertain artists and socialites alike. Completed in1913, it was designed by Delano and Aldrich as a Beaux Arts pavilion featuring a bold Palladian entrance, extensive formal gardens, and murals by Howard Gardiner Cushing and Robert Chanler. In1982, her granddaughter Pamela T. LeBoutillier adapted the building as a residence, adding two flanking wings for a kitchen and bedroom designed by Charles G. Meyer, Jr.
