In 2014, the Society recognized Ms. Mac Griswold for The Manor: Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island, a book that brings to life three centuries of history at Sylvester Manor, one of Long Island’s rare surviving 18th century plantations located on Shelter Island. The subject of a Guggenheim Fellowship award, The Manor provides an opportunity to experience Long Island’s history of slavery through a creative lens, and allows the reader to appreciate the mystery and excitement that can unfold when interacting with historic landscapes and architecture.
