SPLIA COUNTRY HOUSE LECTURE SUNDAY, JANUARY 10, 2010-THE ARCHITECTURE OF GROSVENOR ATTERBURY posted on: 0000-00-00
Grace Auditorium at Cold Spring Harbor Lab, 25A, 3PM
In the final decade of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, the United States experienced exponential growth and a flourishing economy, and with it, a building boom. Grosvenor Atterbury (1869-1956) produced more than one hundred major projects, including an array of grand country houses, picturesque estates, informal summer cottages, and farm groups. There were also a number of Long Island projects including Cold Spring Harbor's Wawapek Farm, Bayberry Point and Scully Place in Islip. However, it was his role as a town planner and civic leader and his work to create model tenements, hospitals, workers’ housing, and town plans for which he is most celebrated. His Forest Hills Gardens, designed in association with the Olmsted Brothers, is lauded as one of the most highly significant community planning projects of its time.
Authors Peter Pennoyer and Anne Walker will present an illustrated lecture on their new book The Architecture of Grosvenor Atterbury at Grace Auditorium at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Route 25A, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 3p.m. Reservations suggested as seating is limited. Fee: $10

| HISTORIC REHABILITATION TAX CREDIT WORKSHOPS - FEB. 9, COLD SPRING HARBOR, FEB. 10 RIVERHEAD posted on: 0000-00-00
Rehabilitation tax credits provide real financial incentives for the reuse of historic buildings. Underutilized on Long Island, these credits are not limited to distressed census tracts, have great potential in downtown revitalization, and can apply to both commercial and residential properties. To learn more about the full scope of the federal and state programs, please join industry experts and the New York State Historic Preservation Office at one of two Long Island locations for a workshop discussion on program eligibility, application procedures, and how credits can be monetized.
Workshops are free and will provide program overviews with information on National Register listing (required for accessing the tax credit programs), financing information (including syndication opportunities for non-profits), case studies, and time for question and answers. Developers, preservationists, local governments, property owners, and architects will have special interest.

| TEARDOWNS AND ECONOMIC HARDSHIP/FREE PRESERVATION WORKSHOPS FOR LOCAL BOARDS MAY 15 AND JUNE 5 - posted on: 0000-00-00
A look at innovative and lucrative zoning strategies designed to prevent excessive land development.
Many towns and villages on Long Island are experiencing high numbers of teardowns. Demolition applications
are increasing as land values escalate. Economic hardship criteria are utilized as one of many arguments supporting
the demolition of historic structures, and the difficulty in defining the extent of “hardship” appears to
contribute to the rate of teardowns in our historic districts. An examination of these issues and a look at innovative
zoning strategies designed to prevent excessive land development will assist members of local architectural
and historic review boards in their application approval process.
The Village of Southampton, with nearly 500 designated resources in four historic districts, provides an ideal
case study for the impact of teardowns and the difficulties of evaluating economic hardship applications. Workshop
participants will have the opportunity to share their issues, questions and concerns with the guest speakers
and with local preservationists.
Each workshop is provided free of charge through funding by the Certified Local Government program of the
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Lunch is included in this program.
